Recent research shows that mothers who took supplements of omega-3 fish oil during pregnancy may reduce the risk of babies suffering from colds during the first six months of life. The study was based on more than 800 infants, in which the mothers of these infants consuming omega-3 supplements, especially during the second half of pregnancy.

A baby whose mothers consume capsules Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) 400mg daily, the risk of having a cold at the age of one month is smaller than the control group.

In the group of parents who take the supplements for three months, can reduce the likelihood of developing the disease by 14 percent, reducing the risk of suffering from fever for 6 months, respiratory problems, rashes and other illnesses. But significantly, they will be more frequent vomiting.

Researchers from Emory University in Georgia, the United States said the trial conducted in Mexico showed that the infants included in the group whose mothers consume DHA, looked healthier overall.

The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, said the DHA affects the duration of symptoms of the disease and reduce the chances of infants suffering from colds.

Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in brain and eye development in the fetus, especially during the last trimester of pregnancy. While previous studies in adults and children, omega 3 have shown varying effects on the immune system and disease.

Nevertheless, the researchers say there is need for additional research to know for certain how fatty acids affect the immune system in infants and how large the potential benefits of taking supplements during pregnancy and during lactation, the researchers said.
